Learning Exchange with Tokyo Soteria | 2023-present

Aung Mental Health Initiative (Aung MHI) has been collaborating closely with Tokyo Soteria since 2023 through ongoing exchanges of knowledge and experience in community-based mental health care. Tokyo Soteria members regularly visit Mandalay to observe programs and share their expertise, while Aung MHI staff take part in symposiums, workshops, and international events.

In 2023, Tokyo Soteria invited Dr. Aung Min to Japan to speak at symposiums, and Dr. San San Oo and Nyarna Linn to Italy for events, networking, and learning activities. They also organized exhibitions of Aung MHI members’ paintings in Tokyo and Okinawa, introducing Myanmar artists’ work to new audiences.

In 2024, Tokyo Soteria invited Dr. Aung Min and Dr. San San Oo to Japan for a mental health and theatre project, where Aung MHI members contributed background paintings. That year, Nyarna Linn and Dr. Htet Eain Khin also participated in the Young Carers Symposium in Japan, strengthening cross-cultural exchange.

In 2025, Aung MHI and Tokyo Soteria worked together to create a Safe Space inside Mandalay Mental Hospital, offering a community-based environment for emotional recovery. They also presented the initiative at the World Congress of Psychiatry and engaged in learning and networking with mental health partners in Bologna, Italy. Tokyo Soteria invited Aung MHI to Japan to speak at symposiums and to screen Dr. Aung Min’s films Heart Broken Bird and Mrauk Oo Story.
